The Songlines by Bruce Chatwin – The Folio Society.

According to the antropological research of Bruce Chatwin, the Aboriginal Songlines -the Stories of the “Dreamtime”- bring us the melody of the world, the roots, the rules and the respect for it.
In our daily walkabout we can elevate ourselves “from the ground to the sky” raising a ladder of armony and joy.

The seven pillars of wisdom by T. E. Lawrence. Published by Jonathan Cape, 1935.

The repetition of the tool on the covers to mention the “horror vacui”,  expression of the Arabesque Islamic Art. In the onlay, the meaning of this book: the melting of the two cultures, the Arab and the British; neither an overlap, nor a superimposition between the two, but where form and content are in a complementary balance.

The DB Bookbinding Competition 2011 Private View will take place on Saturday 26 November from 4-6pm.

The exhibition will run from 26th November 2011 – 22nd January 2012
at the John Rylands Library, Manchester

Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 5pm
Sunday and Monday 12 noon – 5pm

Closed 23 December 2011 – 3 January 2012 inclusive

The Trial by Franz Kafka – The Folio Society, 1972.

Full coloured parchment hard binding.

The design is inspired by the final of Kafka’s novel.

After a surreal trial, K. – the protagonist – is sentenced to death. Even his death is fast and inexplicable: “[...] But the hands of one of the gentleman were laid on K.’s throat, while the other pushed the knife deep into his heart and twisted it there, twice. As his eyesight failed, K. saw the two gentlemen cheek by cheek, close in front of his face, watching the result. “Like a dog!” he said, it was as if the shame of it should outlive him.”
The stain of blood on the book cover symbolizes the stain of shame for all the unjust deaths commit by the mankind.

The books will be exhibited till the 16th of March 2011

“We all emerged from Gogol’s Overcoat”. This famous Dostoevsky’s sentence, that typifies the heritage left by Gogol to the Russian modern literature, inspired my design: names of Russian writers, subsequent to Gogol, emerge from a “protective” collar coat.

The 34th annual Designer Bookbinders Competition. The set book for this year’s competition is ‘The Collected Stories of Gogol’ by Nikolai Gogol, published by the Folio Society.
